The Line Of Sun interview with Hakea Founder Casey Eastwell

PUBLISHED 9 May 2023

Casey Eastwell is the founder of Australian swimwear label Hakea – a label that bridges the art world and swim movement.  Casey began her journey as a graphic designer, her love for the sun and sea meant she was always chasing a warm ocean adventure.  After a long search for swimwear that was both practical yet reflected her personal style, she decided to embark on a journey of creating her own.

Tell us about your creative space

We’ve just launched a new space in Byron Bay called Sunup Spacewhich I’m so excited about. It diverges from traditional retail and its concept explores our brand values, not just our products. It’s home to our showroom and will feature seasonal events and displays, connecting brands, artists and the community over life’s simple pleasures from great food, wine, art, music, books and more.

What exciting projects do you have coming up that you can share with us?

We’ve just launched our latest collection ‘La Vacación’. A capsule of sophisticated pieces that seamlessly transition from the beach to the city. Steeped in inspiration from the return of travel, the designs are transporting and mesmerizing, blurring practicality with beauty, style and versatility. A considered collection enhancing your vacation experience and allowing you to travel light.

How did you keep yourself sane during the Covid lockdowns?

Spending time in nature, surfing, meditation and cultivating creativity were all keeping me grounded and resilient during this time. Whenever things felt overwhelming I could turn to any one of these things.

What are you currently: Listening to? Reading? Watching?

I’ve been reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer who so beautifully reminds us of our belonging to the natural world. I’ve had the latest Hakea playlist ‘sunset on the veranda’ on constant repeat recently. Sadly, I’ve finished both seasons of the White Lotus and now dreaming of a trip to Sicily!

Which element of your work do you thrive off the most?

Getting feedback from women who had the same problem as me, finding swimwear a nightmare, and hearing how comfortable and supported in Hakea they feel makes this whole venture worthwhile. I’m really grateful my work allows me to carve out a lifestyle that suits my flow and has allowed me to connect with so many inspiring women who are doing the same.
